Residential Electrical Panel Upgrades

Eligibility

Eligibility for this program is set by Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. Sec. 216C.45).
You may qualify if:

For single-family homes

  • You own a single-family home, and your total annual household income is at or below 150 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI).

For multifamily buildings

  • You own a multifamily building where at least 50 percent of the units are occupied by households with incomes at or below 150 percent of AMI.
  • You can check your income using the Minnesota Commerce Department’s Area Median Income Look-Up Table. This table lists AMI levels by county and household size.
  1. Check your income eligibility using the AMI lookup tool.
  2. Confirm that your building type qualifies (single-family or multifamily).
  3. Determine which electrical panel upgrades you need based on program rules.
  4. Work with an approved contractor once the state publishes the official list before program launch.
  5. Complete the installation and submit documentation for your grant.

Eligible Electrical Panel Upgrades

For single-family homes, you may upgrade:

  • Equipment, wiring, or devices needed to increase your electrical panel to 200 amps or higher, or
  • Equipment that brings your home to a level where all energy needs can be met with electricity, based on the National Electrical Code used in Minnesota, or
  • A smart panel, with or without additional wiring or equipment

For multifamily buildings, you may upgrade:

  • Equipment, wiring, and devices needed to increase electrical panel capacity, including feeder panels, to a level where the building’s energy needs can be met fully with electricity, based on the National Electrical Code used in Minnesota

All electrical work must be completed by an approved contractor. The official contractor list will be available before the program launches.


Grant amounts

Single-family home grants:

The maximum grant amount depends on your household income:

  • Up to $3,000 if your income is below 80 percent AMI
  • Up to $2,000 if your income is between 80 percent and 150 percent AMI

Multifamily building grants:

  • Grant amounts are based on the number of units receiving upgrades. Grants are capped at $50,000 per building.
